Whois stands for who-is. This is a process which checks a domain for its avalibility and if it is avalible sends back information including:
Name of Registarant
Address of Registrant
Phone Number of Registrant
Email of Registrant
Name of Registar

This can be potencially dangerous as some people enter real information and all their information is avalible for anyone to see.

Backorder:
This is an option being increasingly added to Domain Registars that allows your to register a domain that has not been renewed on its expiration date. It then registers that domain to the registrant that has backordered it. That is why it is very important to renew your domain names near the expiration dates as they may be registered to someone else the next time you look.


Renewing:
This is what you should do when your domain name is coming towards its expiration date. A week before your domain is going to be expired renew it via your Domain Registars Control Panel.
