Ghost Hosting By webmaster@evilcowgod.com Monday, 09 December 2002, 01:48 GMT A lot of people are faced with the problem of getting a good host that does not remove your site over the slightest legal threat. A surprising amount of hosts will remove your perfectly legitimate website because some punk sent them a letter pretending a file was a virus, and the webhost cant be bothered checking. Another common trick these assholes play is to find a reference to a product on your page and forge an email pretending to be person who sells that product. Sometimes you want to distribute contreversial, but legal, material such as an exploit for company X and company X sends a load of bull to your host such as... "The site is claiming to give players access to cheats within the game which in fact do not exist. The page will harvest player passwords so that the user of the site can go ahead and access other players accounts within the game and quite possibly trick them into downloading and installing harmful trojans and viruses onto their system." That Example was a lie by the software company Jagex(www.jagex.com) when they knew the cheat was real and were testing it at the time. SOLUTION Ghost Hosting! Thats right, I just made up my own word :o) Im not sure if this sort of thing has been done before so why not? Ok the idea is to have a URL redirector that is in a way like cjb.net but rather than using a frame, it actualy connects to your webhost and gets the page for you, acting as a buffer between you and your webhost! ADVANTAGES This would be easy and cheap for people to set up by people who arnt bothered as much by the legal stuff, but arnt proper webhosts. This would could also increase your website's security in some cases, by making it harder to find information about your webhost (even host it use your own PC, behind a host ghost!) EXAMPLE I have made my own Ghost Host to show people how easy it is. Although my ghost host is extremely limited, I have only been programming in PHP for a few hours, Im sure the proffesionals could make it perfect.
